What is a spirit?

What is a spirit?

Your spirit is the invisible part of you that lives forever! It’s what gives your body life. Without your spirit, your body would only be an empty shell. But where does it come from? To answer that, let’s take a look at how the very first human spirit came to be.

Breath of Life

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Genesis 2:7

So Genesis tells us that Adam, the first man, received his spirit directly from God! The breath of life from God is what made him a living soul, and the same is true for us. While our Heavenly Father forms our bodies in our mother’s womb, He breathes life into us, giving us a spirit so that we can experience life as flesh – walking, talking and growing in faith with Him.

What happens to it?

Young Girl Looking in Mirror With Spirit Behind Her

When our time here comes to an end and we pass away, our bodies return to the dust of the Earth, where they originally came from; but our spirit, so long as we accept and walk with Christ during our lifetime, goes to be with God. On the other hand, if we rebel against God during our time on Earth and reject His Son as our Savior, after we die, our spirit would go to a place where there is no rest, and we would never be able to talk to God again.

But don’t worry, friends! God loves you and He wants very much to spend forever with you. If you love Him too, your spirit is pleasing to Him. So much so, that one day, after you pass away, He will raise up and perfect your body, so that He can have every part of you with Him in His kingdom—your spirit and your body!

So just remember friends, that there is more to you than what meets the eye!
